Overview:

Fig-8 Aerial Armored Cable GYTC8S and GYTC8A are both outdoor, self-supporting "Figure-8" fiber optic cables, they are used for aerial pole-to-pole installations.

What is GYTC8S Cable?

  • GYTC8S ("S" for Steel): Uses a corrugated steel tape armor (PSP) wrapped around the loose tube core, providing higher crush and mechanical resistance in heavy-load or high-pressure environments.
  • The GYTC8S cable is a standardized outdoor, self-supporting Figure-8 fiber optic cable engineered primarily for overhead aerial telecommunication and data networks. It features a modular multi-tube stranded core accompanied by a heavy-duty steel messenger wire, all bound under a single cross-sectional Polyethylene (PE) jacket shaped like an "8". This design eliminates the need for separate lashing wires or external messengers, significantly accelerating installation speeds over long distances.
  • Structural Composition
Cable Component Material & Design Profile Operational Purpose
Central Strength Member Phosphated steel wire (with optional PE coating) Prevents axial shrinkage and resists thermal expansions.
Optical Element Gel-filled PBT loose tubes containing 250 µm fibers. Isolates and cushions fibers from micro-bending stresses.
Water Blocking Core filling compound and specialized water-blocking tape. Arrests longitudinal moisture migration inside the core.
Armor Layer Corrugated steel-plastic composite tape (PSP). Provides high crush load resistance and rodent protection.
Integrated Messenger Stranded steel wires (typically 7 strands). Absorbs the structural tensile loads across high-wind poles.
Outer Jacket High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) or standard PE. Delivers UV resistance and weatherproofing.

What is GYTC8A Cable?

  • GYTC8A ("A" for Aluminum): Uses an aluminum-polyethylene bonded sheath/tape armor, offering lighter weight and good moisture/corrosion resistance with slightly different mechanical properties.
  • The GYTC8A cable is an outdoor, self-supporting Figure-8 fiber optic cable designed for aerial installations, utilizing an aluminum-polyethylene laminated tape (APL) shield rather than steel tape. Like other Figure-8 designs, its defining feature is the integrated stranded steel messenger wire bound into a single Polyethylene (PE) outer jacket, allowing it to be strung directly between poles without separate messenger lines or field lashing.
  • Structural Composition
Cable Component Material & Design Profile Operational Purpose
Central Strength Member Solid metallic steel wire (coated with PE when core counts are high). Resists axial shrinkage and thermal elongation.
Loose Tubes Gel-filled Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT) tubes housing 250 µm fibers. Protects optical fibers from moisture and micro-bending.
Waterproof Barrier Hydrophobic core compound alongside specialized water-blocking tape. Prevents longitudinal water migration throughout the cable.
Armor / Shielding Smooth or corrugated aluminum-polyethylene laminate (APL) tape. Provides excellent moisture barrier and electro-magnetic shielding.
Integrated Messenger Stranded steel wires running parallel to the main optical core. Carries the installation span tension over high clearances.
Outer Jacket High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) forming a cross-sectional "8". Delivers robust UV stabilization and structural weather protection.

Key Comparisons GYTC8S vs. GYTC8A Cable:

  • The primary differentiator is the armor material. While the GYTC8S utilizes corrugated steel tape (PSP) for premium crush and rodent prevention, the GYTC8A relies on aluminum tape (APL).
  • GYTC8A offers superior chemical/moisture protection but lower mechanical crush boundaries compared to GYTC8S.
Feature GYTC8S GYTC8A
Armor Type Corrugated steel tape (PSP) Aluminum-polyethylene tape
Structure Figure-8 with steel messenger wire Figure-8 with metal reinforcing messenger wire
Crush & Impact Resistance Higher rigidity and crush protection Moderate protection, lighter flexibility
Weight Generally heavier due to steel armor Lighter due to aluminum construction
Application Long-distance aerial runs requiring high crush/rodent resistance Standard aerial installations where weight or specific metal compatibility is preferred
Selection Attribute GYTC8A (Aluminum Shield) GYTC8S (Steel Armor)
Primary Shielding APL Tape: Aluminum layer provides a tight moisture boundary. PSP Tape: Corrugated steel tape provides mechanical armor.
Crush & Impact Resistance Moderate: Better suited for standard wind/ice conditions. High: Superior resistance to deep crushing forces.
